Non intimidating fitness programs

Certainly many factors affect our health and some are beyond our control, but these statistics should make us try to do what we can to keep the path to health shoveled clean.

According to the National Institutes of Health:

Osteoporosis

* affects 20-25 million people (80% women)
* $13 billion in health care costs

“If you don’t want to spend your later years resting in a nursing home, losing your independence and draining your or your family’s financial resources, you need to do something to remain independent. According to numerous studies and aging manuals, that “something” is strength training, an activity known to increase bone mass and thus decrease the possibility of osteoporosis.”

According to the American Diabetes Association:

Type II Diabetes

* Affects 21 million people — millions more have pre-diabetes
* $116 billion direct health care costs (one out of every $5 of health care dollars)
* $58 billion in indirect cost

“Research has demonstrated that people at risk for type 2 diabetes can prevent or delay developing type 2 diabetes by losing a little weight. The results of the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) showed that moderate diet changes and physical activity can delay and prevent type 2 diabetes” (the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse http://diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/dm/pubs/riskfortype2/index.htm)
