Can’t we all just get along?!?!?  The gym has always been my second home.  As the years have passed I realize that we all have the one common goal…to live a healthier lifestyle.  So…how can we make the gym enjoyable for all.  Here are my Top Gym Etiquette Tips!

  1. Wear anti-perspirant:  Yes nobody want to inhale your body odor:)  Maybe before your workout update your application for all of us:)
  2. Bring A Sweat Towel:  I have a memory of laying down on the bench press and completely soaking my head with somebody else’s sweat.  Bring an extra towel or use the hand wipes for your bench or cardio machine.
  3. Mirror Space:  Mirrors are a great way to check your technique but remember others are sharing the gym to.  I remember as a young lifter a big bodybuilding dude yelling across the room at me that I was in his way.   I guess he owned the gym or at least he thought??
  4. Rerack your equipment:  The Mecca Of Bodybuilding was a great example of this.  Trying to find a matching dumbbell was a job in itself.  You literally had to search around for the matching 35# dumbbell.  You might find it on the other side of gym.  Rerack your dumbbells, weight plates, group x equipment in the desired location.
  5. Put clips on your bars:  Very common for novice lifters to forget to add clips to the curl bar.  Very important for you and others safety.
  6. No Grunting:  Grunting to finish the lift is interesting conversation.  No science has ever proven that grunting at high octives will increase your chance to finish the lift.  Coaching several world champions…I have never witnessed the strongest men in the world to ever grunt or scream to finish any world record.  Maybe grunting is an ego thing????  Let your lifting do the talking.
  7. Hogging gym equipment:  This incidence happened to me today:)  I understand staying on your rest interval is super important but others are waiting for the same identical bench or piece of equipment.  Today as a fellow lifter was resting at least 3 minutes between sets  I asked if I could work in with him on the bench in between his rest periods…his reply was no:).  So as I graciously walked away I noticed that he stayed on the same bench for 30 minutes and basically froze that one piece of equipment.  The best advice is for all of us to work together.  As long as you are not disrupting or taking to long between your sets…I think we should all work together:)
  8. Sweat towels:  These are for your sweat…not to blow your nose:)
  9. Muddy Shoes:  During the winter time I notice alot of the cardio machines are covered with gravel and mud.  Best advice…bring an extra pair of workout shoes.
  10. Communicate with fellow gym members:  The gym to me has been the most positive environment that I have ever been in.  The gym’s of the past offered you a environment but one thing I do notice with today’s gym is the anti-social environment.  Now i know we are there to get our workouts accomplished but the gyms of the past offered a community type atmosphere. I have found gyms to have a small town atmosphere and that everybody in the gym has a reason for being there.  We are all sharing that common goal.  Today’s common gym does not have this.  Everybody has ipod’s on and nobody communicates or even takes interest in one another.  Now I also know that the gym is not a social hall or people can be disruptive…but there should be a balance of both.  I have met some amazing people and I actually met my beautiful wife,  my best friend, and many long lasting relationships in the gym world!

Please leave the perfume at home. I have a terrible allergy to perfume. It makes my lungs burn, triggers a runny nose, and sinus drainage. It triggers asthma attacks in my mother. Obviously, this makes it almost impossible to breathe when doing cardio.

I guess if you’re looking to hook up, save the perfume for the bars. I promise you that nobody of the opposite sex likes the smell of perfume/body odor.
