Gym Etiquette

Gym Etiquette…very important to know!  I wish sales consultants would or trainers would educate their members of these Top 10 things not to do.  Over the years I have witnessed many bad habits that people have in the gym.  Here is my list of the Top 10 tips to help us all get along and make the gym a happy place:)

  1. Failure to unrack your weights!   This ranks as number one because it is probably the number one problem in gyms.   I have witness people chopping off toes, unracking squats racks and the bar flipping, unracking one side of the bench causing the bar to flip and also most recently a whole leg press flipping over from the person unracking only one side at a time!   When I see a squat or bench bar loaded with plates I kinda laugh to myself and think wow it must have been to heavy to unrack.   UNRACK YOUR WEIGHTS!!
  2.  Hogging multiple machines!  This has become a major problem in the larger commercial gyms.  Since the total body circuit is very effective I see so many people using multiple machines at once.  If you choose a circuit as your workout then I recommend doing your body-weight or dumbbells.  Otherwise you are hogging to many machines for others to use!
  3. Not wiping up your sweat!  This is probably one of the worst habits people have.  If you are a heavy sweater carry a towel with you and clean up after yourself.  Please remember to clean your cardio and weight machines after you have used them.
  4. Grunting to the gods!  There has been numerous studies that show no proof that grunting as loud as possible will help you lift more weight in the gym!  Just annoying!
  5. Slamming or dropping your weights!  First of all this is dangerous and very destructive to the equipment.  Control the weights safely to the grounds or the starting point in the machine.
  6. Not allowing others to work in with you on a machine!  Commonly all lifters are doing multiple sets.  As a former powerlifter it was not uncommon to perform at least 5-10sets of the main core lifts.  I always let people work in with me.    No matter what fitness level an individual is please allow others to work in with you.  REMEMBER THE GYM IS NOT YOURS ONLY… PLEASE SHARE EQUIPMENT!
  7. Profanity!  I can swear like a sailor but there is a time and a place for it!  You never know who is listening?  Set an example for the young lifter!
  8. Sitting on machines watching T.V!  With the addition of the television in the weight room people are now procrastinating their workouts by watching T.V  between their sets.  I have watched people take at least 5-10minutes in between sets watching there favorite T.V show. 
  9. Blowing your nose in the provided gym towels! Okay this is gross!  Use a Kleenex please!!
  10. Not wearing  deodorant!  Okay sweat is awesome as long as we control our arm pit odor!  Nothing is worse than exercising next to somebody that smells like a salsa garden:)  USE IT!!
